Making Maps in the Maya Shmoel Innovation Lab

Kindergarten visited the Maya Shmoel Innovation Lab to create a concrete model of their classroom for our math lesson.  Students were tasked with making a map of the layout of the classroom.  They were asked several questions to help fuel their design process like "what is the shape of the classroom?" "what are in the corners of the room?" "how can we show the shelves, tables, and chairs?"  Students used a variety of building materials including blocks, Magnatiles, linking magnets, and building sets to create their map of the classroom.

We started with the outline of the room.

Then we moved onto what is in the classroom.

Finally, they picked important parts of the room to mark like the bathroom and classroom door.

The finished map.
